Day Trip #1: The Houston Zoo

The Houston Zoo offers free admission after 12pm on the first Tuesday of every month. If you can schedule your trip to the zoo for a weekday afternoon, this can be a great way to spend some time outside without breaking the bank.

Even if you cannot schedule your visit for a Tuesday, you can still enjoy an affordable day at the zoo. General admission is $14 for kids and $18 for adults. Tickets can be purchases ahead of time online so that you will not waste part of your morning standing in line for tickets.

The Houston Zoo has exhibits and activities that are great for kids and adults of all ages, making it a great choice for anyone looking for an activity that will be fun for the whole family.

Day Trip #2: Children’s Museum of Houston

The Children’s Museum of Houston has 14 hands on activities that are perfect for younger kids looking to learn by exploring. One of the museum’s highlights is a ropes challenge course that consists of 7 obstacles that will test your child’s agility and endurance. This course is open to kids ages 5 to 15 and is a great way to keep the kids active without going out and braving the Houston heat. Like many of the museums in Houston, the Children’s Museum of Houston is free from 5pm to 8pm on Thursday nights.

Day Trip #3: Galveston Island

Galveston Island lies just an hour southeast of Houston and is a great place to go and spend the day outside. Walk on the beach, swim, and finish off your day at one of the area’s top seafood restaurants.

Day Trip #4: Houston Arboretum and Nature Center

The Houston Arboretum and Nature Center covers 155 acres and includes countless educational exhibits that are all free and open to the public. You are bound to learn something new when you read the information signs found along the area’s 5 miles of trails. Kids will love to see all the turtles that live in the sanctuary’s pond. The sanctuary even welcomes pets as long as they are on a leash.

If you make your reservations ahead of time, you can enjoy a free 90 minute boat tour that covers the Port of Houston. Here, you can learn about the history of the area and get an up close look at the ocean freighters that travel in and out of Houston.
