Must-See Museums in Houston

plane

This deeply historic city features some of the most interesting museums covering everything from natural to national history. For those who want something quiet, fun, and thought-provoking, then these museums should make their must-see list.

  1. Houston Museum of Natural Science
  2. With an average of two million visitors annually, this is one of the most popular museums of its kind in the country. The HMNS features over thirteen permanent exhibits and there’s something for everyone.

These exhibits are on paleontology, astronomy, archeology, and there’s even a section specifically designed for children. There are seasonal visiting exhibitions that keep things interesting, as well as a planetarium, butterfly center, observatory, and IMAX theater. Make sure to check out their store for many great souvenirs.

  3. Space Center Houston
  4. “Houston, we have a problem.” Since the 1960s, the city has always been associated with space. The Space Center features the Northrop Grumman IMAX Theater that showcases advances in aerospace technology.

There are also artifacts from America’s forays into space. These include the Mercury 9 Capsule, the Lunar Rover, and even a mockup of the SkyLab. Best of all, the Space Center is absolutely kid friendly and even has a dedicated kids’ area called Martian Matrix. There are tours available that take you through the aerospace history of the US.

  5. Holocaust Museum
  6. Commemorating one of the most adverse events in human history, this museum brings you through an emotional journey. Like many of its equivalents across the world, it features tales of survivors and victims via the Bearing Witness exhibit. It also showcases an authentic World War II railcar that was used to ferry Jews to the concentration camps.

All this is interspersed with moving art pieces and other artifacts of the age. Tickets are affordable and entry is free on Sundays.

  7. Contemporary Arts Museum Houston
  8. The CAMH is a work of art in itself. Hewn nearly completely from stainless steel,  the building stands out as a sight to behold in the Houston cityscape.

The beauty of CAMH is that it focuses on local and regional art above all others in a rotating setup. It also offers educational programs to help increase awareness of Houston’s thriving art scene. Best of all, admission to the museum is absolutely free.

  9. San Jacinto Monument
  10. At 57 feet, it’s considered the one of the tallest standing monuments in the world. What makes this site and its attached museum worth visiting is how deeply it looks into Texan history. This includes Developing Houston which chronicles Houston’s evolution through the years through photographs. It also features the Texas Navy Exhibit that looks at the state’s maritime history. The San Jacinto Monument is perfect for history buffs and is one of the most affordable tours available.

Houston’s museums represent a wonderfully eclectic mix that touches a wide range of interests. These and many others are certainly worth visiting.
